Sunday Walk – Walking the Dane.
For centuries the River Dane has been fundamental to the industrial development of the town. As one of the fastest rising and swiftest flowing rivers in the North West the Dane can bring about destruction as well as be a source of power. It has also been both an aid and barrier to communication.
Does Congleton owe its existence to the influence of the river and its tributaries as sources of fresh water for both the inhabitants of the town and their animals? Would it have become a market centre during the medieval period had it not been situated where two major trade routes -east to west and north to south met at a point where the River Dane could easily be crossed? The importance of the river in enabling the town to become one of the earliest beneficiaries of the industrial revolution has been well documented and this legacy is still evident today.
