Description
Congleton possesses an extensive collection of municipal charters. In this booklet, the second of two, the author outlines both the national and local contexts surrounding the granting of the third Charter of Incorporation by James I in 1624/25 and its renewal by Charles II in 1666. Using extracts from the Congleton Corporation ‘Order’ and account books it has been possible to identify the process followed and the costs involved. In 1666, the members of the corporation thought it prudent to have the privileges gained in 1624/25 confirmed by Charles II on his restoration.
