History and Archaeology Trail

Welcome to the History and Archaeology Trail at Congleton Museum! This engaging adventure is perfect for families eager to explore the rich past of our charming town. Embark on a journey through time as you uncover fascinating stories, from ancient coins to multi-functional toothpicks!

Complete the trail and receive your History and Archaeology reward sticker. Don’t forget to fill your Heritage Passport, the more activities you complete, the more stickers you are rewarded.

The History and Archaeology trail is one of four new free trails part of the Town Expeditions event during the summer holidays.

You can collect trails and your Heritage Passport from the front desk at Congleton Museum. You can collect a pencils at the museum to use, or you can bring your own.

Tips before you start your Town Expeditions.

  • Timing: Each trail takes about 30-45 minutes, perfect for young children.

  • Observation: Encourage children to look for objects in the museum that may relate to the activities.
  • Interactive Learning: Use trail clues and facts to discover more history!
  • Creative Fun: Bring notebooks for drawing or note-taking.

  • Breaks: Take short rests and hydrate.
  • Respect Nature and Heritage: Teach children to leave no trace and appreciate the environment.
  • Be Mindful: There may be other museum visitors not taking part in the trail.

Explore Poole Hoard, that contains around 1500 coins dated from Emperor Constantine the Great (AD 306 to 337).
Do you know that the Peover Hoard contains 6,956 Roman coins marking the reigns of 22 emperors?
Find on the trail the Knutsford Hoard. It consists of 103 coins, three brooches and two finger rings.
