Family Stories – Toys and Childhood in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s.

You will need: either a printer or paper and colouring pencils.

The ‘Family Stories’ activity, is a heart-warming part of the Town Expeditions event this summer holiday! This special activity encourages older relatives to share cherished memories of the toys they played with as children. It’s a wonderful opportunity for grandparents and parents to engage in meaningful conversations with younger family members, fostering intergenerational connections. Come and discover the joys of storytelling and learn about the past through the eyes of your loved ones, creating lasting memories together.

How it works?

  1. Parents/grandparents: find a toy in your home that dates from the 1960s to the 2000s. If you do not have your toys anymore, try finding a photograph of the toy or doing an internet search for the toy.
  2. Engage in conversation with a younger relative about the toy. You may wish to use the below questions as a starting point.
    • What was this toy called at the time?
    • Do you remember who bought it for you, and when and where it was purchased?
    • How was it played with?
    • What vivid memories are associated with this toy?
    • How many toys did you have in that period?
    • What other games did you play at that time?
  3. Children/grandchildren: Fill in the card for the toy you’ve just learned about, use the example to help you. You can either print the blank card and fill it in, or create your own card using paper and colouring pencils – don’t forget to draw the toy if you’re making your own.
  4. What happens next?
    • Pop into the museum to collect your Family Stories sticker reward to put in your Heritage Passport.
    • Why not submit your Family Stories to us by emailing info@congletonmuseum.co.uk or bringing it to the museum.
