Looking for oral histories and photographs of the Green Island area: In celebration of the Green Island Fiesta!

The Green Island Fiesta is fast approaching, and we at Congleton Museum are thrilled to be a part of this exciting event! This unique festival, set against the backdrop of Congleton’s beautiful Green Island area, is a celebration of the rich industrial history and vibrant community spirit that has shaped this special part of our town. The fiesta will take place on the 8th of September, and we have some wonderful activities lined up that you won’t want to miss!

Share Your Stories: A Call for Oral Histories and Photographs

Do you have memories of the Green Island area? Perhaps you’ve lived here all your life, or maybe you have family stories passed down through generations. We would love to hear from you!

As part of the Green Island Fiesta, we are putting out a call for oral histories and photographs of the area. We believe that the true heart of Congleton’s history lies in the personal stories and experiences of its residents, and we’re eager to preserve these memories for future generations.

On the day of the event, we will have a special opportunity for you to share your story. Our resident museum manager, Anna Maluk, will be conducting interviews and recording oral histories. Whether it’s a tale of growing up in Green Island, a memorable event about the mills and factories, or simply what life was like in the area, your story matters, and we want to hear it.

Not comfortable speaking on the day? No problem! We’re also collecting photographs, so if you have any old pictures of Green Island, we’d love to see them. These images will help paint a vivid picture of the area’s past, bringing the history of Green Island to life for everyone who visits the museum.

Participate in a Heritage Walk

In addition to collecting stories and photographs, we’re excited to offer a guided heritage walk through the Green Island area. This walk will be led by our knowledgeable Chair of Trustees, who will share fascinating insights into the history of Green Island, from its early days to the present.

The walk will take you through some of the most historically significant sites in the area, offering a unique perspective on Congleton’s past.

  • Date: 8th September
  • Cost: £5 per adult (children 15 years and under free)
  • No need to pre-book: Pay cash or card on the day
  • 11am: Meet at the brewery

All proceeds from the heritage walk will go directly to supporting the museum’s efforts to preserve and share the history of our community.

How to Get Involved

If you’re interested in participating, whether by sharing your story, donating photographs, or joining the heritage walk, here’s how you can get involved:

  • To share your oral history: Come to our booth at the Green Island Fiesta on the 8th of September. Interviews with Anna Maluk will be conducted throughout the day.
  • To donate photographs: Bring your photos to the event, or if you prefer, you can scan and email them to us at info@congeltonmuseum.co.uk. We can also scan them at the museum at a later date.
  • To join the heritage walk: Tickets can be purchased on the day at our booth.
